The Clam Shell awning has been a Floridian favorite since the 50's. Today's clam shells offer non-code hurricane shutter protection and a sun shade awning for a cooler home. The clam shell is hinged mounted at the top of the window with adjustabe support side arms. This type of awning allows the homeowner to keep 
the windows open during a light rain storm.
Clam shells awnings are built using a series of slats that curve toward the bottom. The slats are heavy extruded aluminum and re-enforced with stainless steel rods and bolts. They are available in the standard white color, but you can mix in Florida Keys' tropical colors on different slats to customize your style.
When the clam shell shutter is needed for hurricane protection, they are easily locked into place. This style of hurricane protection is best suited for ground level homes. But be aware, the clam shell will not give you credits on your windstorm hurricane insurance policy.
